The Military Has A Big Impact In Mobile

Mobile has been a key location for the American military since Gen. Andrew Jackson made camp in 1813 near what is now Royal Street in downtown Mobile. Since that time, numerous active and reserve units from all branches of the service have been assigned to the area.

Mobile is currently home to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Mobile District), the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Mobile and the U.S. Coast Guard Air Training Center (ATC), as well as U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, Army Reserve and Alabama National Guard units.

The Mobile Chamber’s Military Affairs Committee seeks to strengthen the relationship of the Mobile business community and members with military interests by communicating issues important to the military community and raising awareness of the impact the military has on our local economy.

“The Mobile Chamber has had a long partnership with local military groups, and we work together to aid them in their efforts to support and aid local veterans and active military,” said Layton Little, the Mobile Chamber’s director of government affairs and lead staff for the Chamber’s Military Affairs Committee.

The committee is led by Richard Stimpson, chairman/investment counselor for Leavell Investment Management, who served in the U.S. Marine Corps as an infantry officer. By working with and helping our local veterans, Stimpson said we, as a community, can help support veterans by looking for ways to incorporate them to help our area reach its full potential.

“Market outside of our area to recruit the fine service men and women who may move to this area once their service commitment is complete,” he added. “There are numerous positions available in our community that would benefit from veterans’ expertise.”
