Industrial Development Board Awards Contract for Demolition at Brookley by the Bay Economic Development Site
The City of Mobile’s Industrial Development Board has awarded the contract for demolition at the Brookley by the Bay Economic Development site.
The Industrial Development Board-owned portion of the Brookley by the Bay site has been identified as the future home for an Airbus A330 final assembly line should Airbus and Lockheed Martin be awarded the LMXT bridge tanker program.
Crews will be removing old buildings and infrastructure that remain on the site from previous use.
“This is a critical next step in preparing this site for future growth,” said Melissa Morrissette, chair of the Industrial Development Board. “This site has the potential to greatly enhance business growth and job creation, making a significant and long-lasting impact on our community’s economy.”
The demolition is being funded by a $1.2 million grant from the Growing Alabama Tax Credit administered by the Alabama Department of Commerce. The program allows private companies and individuals to get a dollar-for-dollar tax credit of up to 50 percent of their total income tax liability for investing in projects approved by the Commission.
This funding was made possible by investments from Alabama Power and Regions Bank.
“We can’t thank the State of Alabama, Secretary of Commerce Greg Canfield, Alabama Power and Regions Bank enough for providing the funding for this project,” said Mobile Chamber President & CEO Bradley Byrne. “Ensuring the availability of development sites for industry is a crucial aspect of the Industrial Development Board’s plan, and this funding demonstrates the successful collaboration and teamwork required to bring these projects to fruition.”
The demolition of the Brookley by the Bay site marks a momentous milestone in the development of this area and its potential to bring new economic growth and opportunities for our community,” said Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson.
The City of Mobile Industrial Development Board awarded the project to Daphne-based, Virginia Wrecking.
Being a local contractor was a condition for winning the bid, aligning with the Mobile Chamber’s Mobile First initiative, which prioritizes hiring local employees and contracting with local companies.
The Industrial Development Board retained Thompson Engineering to consult the bid process. The contract begins on January 12, 2023.
