Farnborough Air Show Day 2

Monday, July 16, 2018

On Monday, Team Mobile doubled up its efforts with one group traveling to the Farnborough Air Show, and a second traveling north of London to Broughton to visit Airbus’s wing manufacturing facility.

Leading the Broughton delegation were Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson and Mobile County Commission President Connie Hudson. Airbus executives hosted the group to a series of meetings and a tour of one of its wing towers. Needless to say, everyone came away with a better understanding on how one piece of an Airbus plane affects an entire area, and ideas on how to better support Mobile’s burgeoning aerospace supplier cluster.

In the UK alone, company officials say Airbus employs more than 14,000 (and more than 6,000 just at the Broughton facility). They manufacture wings for four Airbus commercial aircraft series – the A320, A330, A350 XWB and A380. While there, we also had a special treat as one of Airbus’s Belugas (transporting wings to Hamburg) took off. It was a beneficial trip, according to all who attended including representatives from the Mobile Airport Authority, Mobile City Council and Mobile Area Chamber.

A second group traveled to Farnborough for the show, where they hosted several high-level meetings with aerospace companies, and walked the show floor. This delegation included the Mobile Area Chamber, Mobile Airport Authority and the University of South Alabama. While there, this group was able to tour the A220, Airbus’s newest aircraft that was announced last week, and will be assembled in Mobile.

On tap for Tuesday is another round of meetings for Team Mobile, cold calls with potential identified supplier industries and a Mobile Bay Aerospace Reception hosted by sponsors in Baldwin and Mobile counties, and attended by more than 200 top-level aerospace executives.
