Mobile Chamber & City of Mobile Name First Litter-Free Leader Award Winner

In May, the Mobile Chamber and the City of Mobile teamed up to recognize local businesses taking steps to prevent, collect and eliminate litter in our community. The goal was to encourage businesses to get involved in addressing litter near their storefronts, promoting litter-free efforts with customers and participating in community clean-up events.

During the Mobile Chamber’s July 2022 Board meeting, Mayor Sandy Stimpson presented the first Litter-Free Leader Award to John Barton, CEO of TC Boiler & Piping. Based in Semmes, the company provides a variety of mechanical and construction services including contracting and fabrication. TC Boiler was selected because they sponsored “A Cause to Clean” to help clean up the western Causeway. The company teamed up with Partners for Environmental Progress and the Mobile Bay National Estuary Program for the event.

“John Barton and the TC Boiler team were instrumental in the planning, execution and success of the Causeway cleanup. John provided a lot of manpower and the trucks that ferried volunteers and trash from cleanup sites back to the Austal parking lot,” said Jennifer Denson, executive director of PEP Mobile. “Plus, his team provided a great lunch for volunteers including crawfish. John and the TC Boiler team are committed to preventing and removing litter. We are already planning additional cleanups in other spots.”

In addition to the Causeway cleanup, TC Boiler employees have also participated in PEP Mobile’s Trash Blows campaign along with the City of Mobile. “TC Boiler & Piping is a great example of a company not only keeping its own backyard clean but also stepping outside of its own footprint to do something to improve our community,” Mayor Stimpson said. “Our goal in launching Litter-Free Leaders was to recognize the good work many companies in our private sector are already doing and inspire others to get off the sidelines and get involved as well.”

“Keeping our city clean is critical to attracting new businesses and the growth of our community,” said Mobile Chamber President & CEO Bradley Byrne. “By not only planning a cleanup event but also working day in and day out to continually keep trash off our streets, TC Boiler is an inspiration for the rest of the business community.”

As part of the initiative, a Litter-Free Leader will be named each quarter and Litter-Free Leader of the Year will be announced at the Chamber’s annual State of the City and County event. During today’s Chamber Board meeting, Mayor Stimpson also announced a personal financial contribution to start a prize pool for the annual award winner to be spent on its employees. He also challenged the Chamber’s member businesses to make a financial commitment as well.
