Canfor Southern Pine is investing in new equipment at its local sawmill. The Canadian-based company relocated its U.S. headquarters to Mobile in 2016, three years after the initial announcement Canfor was purchasing Mobile’s Scotch & Gulf Lumber.
Over the years, Canfor has made numerous upgrades to the mill, and this latest investment will further increase productivity and safety. It also ensures viability, said Lee Goodloe, general manager of operations.
Canfor processes high-quality yellow pine to the tune of 75 truckloads a day. Much of the wood is used in residential construction and sold predominately in big box stores throughout the Southeast. The remaining inventory is transported either by rail or truck to other U.S. sites, as well as to China, Europe and the Caribbean, with some exported through the Port of Mobile.
“We are proud of our unwavering commitment to excellence, safety and customer satisfaction, which allows us to safely and efficiently deliver quality products to our customers around the globe,” Goodloe said.
The company maintains four floors in the Van Antwerp building in downtown Mobile with 85-plus employees, and the mill employs another approximately 125 people.
“Our workforce has a long history with this mill, and they are the ones responsible for its success and a culture that has drawn second-generation employees,” added Goodloe. “It’s encouraging to see Canfor’s continued investment in our local sawmill and maintaining more than 200 jobs,” said David Rodgers, the Mobile Area Chamber’s vice president of economic development. “Their operation is critical to Mobile’s housing market, especially considering the demand for building materials during the COVID pandemic and the current supply chain backlog.”
