In August, Canfor Corp. announced its intent to locate its U.S. headquarters in Mobile, and move into the Van Antwerp Building. Canfor Corp.’s global headquarters is in Canada, according to Fred Stimpson, president of Canfor Southern Pine. In October, Canfor’s board and business leaders celebrated the company’s announcement with a reception in their new digs.
The company plans to hire 22 employees in Mobile, in addition to the 25 positions retained here. Canfor has nearly 1,900 employees in the southern United States, where it operates 11 sawmills, four secondary manufacturing plants and a trucking firm.
In 2013, Canfor announced a deal to buy Alabama-based Scotch & Gulf Lumber and take over operation of its Alabama sawmills in Jackson and Fulton, and a sawmill and treatment plant in Mobile.
Troy Wayman, vice president of economic development for the Mobile Area Chamber, said his team has been working on this project for nearly six months. Corporate headquarters is one of the areas of focus for Team Mobile’s economic development recruitment efforts, he added.
“This is a great example of the benefits of a recruitment and a retention program we provide through the Mobile Area Chamber’s economic development program,” Wayman said, noting that new jobs would be added to the Mobile market with Canfor’s headquarters locating here, and other jobs would be retained.
