Business Headlines

 

The Alabama Department of Commerce released its 2020 economic development report card. State wide investments reached nearly $5 billion and nearly 10,000 jobs. AM/NS Calvert’s expansion was highlighted, and Mobile’s contribution was more than $722 million in capital investments and more than 500 jobs. Read the story here.

The Alabama Coastal Foundation’s Oyster Shell Recycling program reached another milestone recently. As of March 31, the program collected more than 15 million shells – enough to cover 37.6 acres. Mobile Area Chamber member participating restaurants are: Bluegill Restaurant, Felix’s Fish Camp, Half Shell Oyster House and Wintzell’s Oyster House.

OWA released the event schedule for the Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival. The event takes place the weekend of May 6-9 and will feature balloon glows, tethered rides (weather permitting) and arts and crafts. It is a free festival open to the public, however there are a limited number of items available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Find the details here.

The History Museum of Mobile will be hosting a Colonial-themed Living History Day at Colonial Fort Condé on April 17 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Visitors will have the opportunity see and interact with demonstrators and re-enactors as they teach about daily life in the 18th century. The Dauphin Island Heritage and Arts Council released Island of Plenty, a living history video detailing the rich Native American heritage of Dauphin Island. The documentary style presentation, filmed in November 2020, features living historians and demonstrators from across the Southeast who will give the viewer a sense of stepping back in time, along with interviews with area archeology experts who bring further insight into the area’s history.
