The Mobile Area Chamber is launching a series of free webinars with Google. The first one, Reach Customers Online With Google During and After COVID-19, is set for Wednesday, Dec. 16, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.

At the Mobile Area Chamber’s Leader’s Exchange, held in Mobile last week, Mobile Bay Firewood won the judges award in a pitch event held at Innovation Portal. The company sells kiln-dried firewood to residential customers, hotels and restaurants, and bundles to commercial customers.

 

Crowd favorites were Keller Works, organic and natural skin-care and more, and Deuce Drone, a drone shipping service. All three are Mobile-based companies.

Business Headlines

 

The City of Mobile and State of Alabama announced a historic land purchase made up of multiple parcels owned by the University of South Alabama Foundation. Commonly known as Brookley by the Bay, this approximately 300-acre swath of land sits along the western shore of Mobile Bay to the east of the Mobile Aeroplex at Brookley. Included is nearly 150 acres of waterfront property, plans to preserve 50 acres of ecologically sensitive wetlands and another 100 acres that will be dedicated to economic development to grow Mobile’s aerospace industry. The Alabama School of Math and Science received a $6.2 million appropriation from the state of Alabama to build a science research center as part of Gov. Kay Ivey’s Public School and College Authority (PSCA) projects appropriation. The school is planning to raise $1.5 million to completely fund the center.

 

Students will have access to modern-day academic, laboratory, and collaborative spaces, positioning them to become global leaders. School officials expect to break ground in the spring of 2021 and the project to take three to five years to complete. Learn more here.

A new, innovative learning program developed by Flight Works Alabama will soon provide a set of classroom kits and interactive techniques designed to help instructors expand students’ creative capacity and encourage the development of innovations and inventions. The program, delivered through seven We Build It Better innovation kits, will introduce new and inventive technologies, expose students to techniques that help build new skill sets, provide hours of curriculum and activities, offer unique resources and promote career awareness. There is still time to participate in the Mobile County Health Department’s survey to gather information from the residents of Mobile County on flu and COVID-19 vaccinations. Reminder: The first window to apply for any MCPSS magnet school closes Friday, Dec. 4, at 3 p.m. Current magnet school students should not reapply with the exception of current magnet Pre-K students who wish to apply to attend a magnet school for kindergarten and current magnet 5th-grade students who wish to apply for a magnet middle school that is not in their feeder program.
