Business Headlines

 

The USS Mobile (LCS 26), built by Austal USA, will be commissioned May 22 at 10 a.m. at the Alabama State Port Authority. Due to continued COVID-19 health concerns, there will be limited attendance allowed. The public is invited to a Mardi Gras-style parade and fireworks over the Mobile River, Friday, May 21 at 6:30 p.m., with fireworks at 9:30 p.m.

The Community Foundation of South Alabama is now open at 212 St. Joseph St. The new facility is designed to be a convening space for nonprofits, businesses and leaders with more than 6,000 square-feet of space and onsite parking. Learn more here.

The Mobile Airport Authority will temporarily close its primary runway at the Mobile Downtown Airport, beginning Monday, May 10 for a $9.1 million rehabilitation project. Improvements, including resurfacing, new lights and enhancing the navigational approach, and expected to be on-going until the fall.

 

“If you are a resident and live within the vicinity of the airport, the level of aviation activity will not change, however, all arrivals and landings will occur on one runway rather than two,” said Chris Curry, president of the Mobile Airport Authority.

ICYMI: Two very important dates were announced this week by Gov. Kay Ivey regarding Alabama’s COVID-19 guidelines. Monday, May 31, at 5 p.m., signals the end of the Safer Apart public health order. Tuesday, July 6, will mark the end of the State of Emergency. The Safer Apart order calls for individuals to continue to follow CDC guidelines encouraging everyone’s personal responsibility to continue social distancing, wearing masks and getting vaccinated.

Visit Mobile announced two Africatown Tourism Workshops – Tuesday, May 11, from 6 to 8 p.m., and Wednesday, May 12, 8 to 10 a.m. Both sessions will be held at the Robert Hope Community Center, 850 Edwards. St. Alabama Tourism Department’s Lee Sentell will highlight the Alabama and U.S. Civil Rights Trail and offer tips from leading tour operators and experience-givers from around the state. No need to register.
