The Mobile Area Chamber announced the executive entrepreneurial training program, Emerging Leaders, is returning to Mobile this year. The program teaches business owners to analyze all aspects of their companies for growth potential. The class is limited to 20 business owners or key executives. Acceptance criteria includes: average annual revenues between $250,000 and $10 million; three years in business; at least one additional employee other than themselves; and the ability to make a significant time commitment of approximately 100 hours of combined classroom, homework and peer-to-peer mentoring. Participation is free. The course runs every other Tuesday, from April 6 to Oct, 19, 5 to 8 p.m. Applications are being accepted through Thursday, March 25. The Alabama Legislature took a planned break this week and is scheduled to reconvene next Tuesday. Friday, Feb. 12, as expected, Gov. Kay Ivey signed into law three Chamber-priority bills. Those were the economic development incentives bill (HB 192), COVID-19 liability protection (SB 30) and the CARES Act income tax exemption (HB 170). Read last week’s edition of From the Floor that includes a tribute to Sen. Richard Shelby, who announced he would not run for reelection in 2022.

Business Headlines

 

With a small gathering of internal leadership, AM/NS Calvert commemorated the groundbreaking of a new $775 million steelmaking facility. The expansion was announced in December 2020 by ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel Corp., the joint venture partners for AM/NS Calvert.

 

Construction is expected to take 24 months and the new facility is anticipated to create 200 direct and 100 indirect jobs in the community. Once completed, the site will produce steel slabs and a broad spectrum of steel grades for Calvert’s end user markets.

Coastal Alabama Partnership recently launched a new program, Coastal Conversations, as a platform to increase civic awareness and engagement across the Mobile-Baldwin region. The organization will host the first of a series of speakers addressing critical community issues next Tuesday, Feb. 23. Find the details on “From Cradle to Career,” presented by Dr. Ron Ferguson below in the events section of this eNews.

Mobile-based Hargrove Engineers + Constructors expanded its Gulf Coast presence with a new office in Houston to support the company’s clients in the oil and gas, refining, chemical and manufacturing industries, as well as other industrial sectors in the area. This is Hargrove’s 16th full-service operation, with 15 domestic offices and one international.

LifeSouth is asking for blood donors to help maintain the needed supply at hospitals across Alabama after many drives and donor centers closed during the recent winter storm. Officials say there is an extreme shortage of type O blood, but all types are needed. The Mobile Bar Association is seeking nominations for its Liberty Bell Award. The annual award is given to an outstanding citizen, particularly a non-lawyer, who by their service has (1) promoted a better understanding of the Constitution, (2) encouraged respect for the law and the courts, (3) stimulated a deeper sense of individual responsibility, (4) contributed to the effective functioning of our government, and/or (5) fostered a better understanding and appreciation of the rule of law. This year’s award will be presented at the MBA Law Day Luncheon Friday, May 14, at Noon, at the Battle House Hotel. Learn more here. The nomination deadline is Friday, April 16.

The Mobile County Community Remembrance Project is conducting the “Mobile County Racial Justice Essay Contest.” The contest is for students attending Mobile County public high schools and is held in conjunction with Black History Month.  Awards include scholarships totaling at least $5,000 to the winners.
