This week the Mobile Area Chamber added its name to a U.S. Chamber of Commerce letter urging Congress to extend the application deadline for the Payroll Protection Program to Dec. 31, 2021.

 

The appeal was sent to Congress to help ensure the segment of small businesses facing the greatest obstacles do not get left behind. More than 600 organizations signed the letter nationwide, including nine in Alabama. Read it here.

Business Headlines

 

Gov. Kay Ivey extended Alabama’s Safer at Home Order today, including a statewide mask requirement through Friday, April 9 at 5 p.m. She also announced the statewide mask order will expire that day.

 

The new order includes key updates.

 

  • Restaurants, Bars and Breweries: No limit on party size at tables but partitions or six-feet between tables and additional sanitation still required;

 

  • Hospitals and Nursing Homes: Up to two visitors allowed (increased by one);

 

  • Senior Citizen Centers: Outdoor programs may resume, except meals, and are subject to the Alabama Department of Senior Services guidelines; and

 

  • Sumer Camps: Social distancing was amended to mirror the one used for schools.

The City of Mobile expanded its Micro-Loan Program and began taking new applications this week. Once business owners meet the criteria set by the the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, these loans become grants. Learn more on the city’s Work with the City of Mobile webpage.

Last week, the University of Mobile announced a new doctoral program – Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia Practice – the first and only one of its kind in the region. Austal USA was awarded a $235 million U.S. Navy contract for EPF 15 (Expeditionary Fast Transport). To date Austal has delivered 12 of the type ships used worldwide for humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, maritime security and more. Known as the pick-up truck of the fleet, the latest one funded will include enhanced medical capabilities.

The Gulf Coast Exploreum is collaborating with NASA for Cosmos 2021: Adventure into the Unknown. The exhibit includes artifacts, interactives, props and more, showcasing the past, present and future of space travel. Find the details here.
