Business Headlines
After years of planning and fundraising, Innovation Portal is officially open for business. Founding members and staff cut the ribbon last week, dedicating the building’s happy spot as Frank’s Bar, after Charter Board Chairman Frank Lott. Learn more about programming and building space here.

USA Health celebrated the opening of its new Fanny Meisler Trauma Center at University Hospital. The approximately 27,000-square-foot facility nearly triples the size of the emergency room and the region’s only level 1 trauma center.
The center has 38 examination rooms and three trauma bays, and to increase efficiency, CT and X-ray imaging are located within the center.

Veterans Recovery Resources broke ground on its new detox and residential facility today, Thursday, Dec. 17. The $6.5 million project includes plans to renovate the 18,000-square-foot historic Raphael Semmes School on Springhill Avenue. The nonprofit organization is dedicated to decreasing substance use, disorder issues and veteran suicide.

The Girl Scouts of Southern Alabama are kicking off its 2020-21 cookie program Sunday, Dec. 27. Joining the lineup this year is the Toast-Yay!™, a French toast–inspired cookie. Also new this year, consumers will be able to order Girl Scout cookies through the Grubhub app and have them delivered directly to them.
