Washington County Economic Development Initiative

 

The Washington County Economic Development Initiative (WCedi) works to increase economic opportunities for businesses and industries and improve the quality of life for individuals in Washington County, Alabama. Since 2004, this initiative has worked in partnership with the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce to provide job opportunities and foster regional business creation. WCedi strives to support and develop existing local industry and promote the southwest Alabama region around the world to potential clients. Washington County offers serious growth opportunities for business and industry by leveraging available industrial sites, excellent infrastructure, and a highly trained regional workforce. The county offers specific growth opportunities in the chemical, steel, and pulp and paper industry sectors.

 

The county seat, Chatom, is 61 miles north of the city of Mobile, near the Mississippi state line. The first county in Alabama, Washington County is known for its recreational, industrial and historical importance. Specific features the county offers are a ready workforce, co-location opportunities with existing manufacturers, diverse chemical feed stocks, competitive utility rates, and direct access to national and international transportation routes.

Recreation

Washington County, Alabama is known for its recreational opportunities. Some of the more well-known ones are outlined below.

 

St. Stephens Historical Park

 

Washington County is home to the St. Stephens Historical Park. A visit to the park is a way to introduce children and adults to Alabama’s rich heritage. There are many recreational activities available for visitors, including fishing in the park’s 100-acre lake, RV camping, primitive camping, biking, birdwatching, horseback riding, picnicking, and hiking. Old St. Stephens Courthouse Museum                             

The St. Stephens courthouse served the county seat for 53 years until the county seat was moved to Chatom in 1907. In 2000 the St. Stephens Historical Commission undertook the restoration and rehabilitation of this historic courthouse.

The St. Stephens Courthouse is now open to the public as a Visitor Center and Museum. Admission is free! Visitors can tour the beautifully restored courthouse from 7:30-4:00 Monday through Friday. No reservations are required, and large groups can call ahead for a guided tour of the Courthouse and Museum and also the nearby Old St. Stephens Historical Park.

 

Chatom Community Center and Lake Ellis                     

The Chatom Community Center is surrounded by a 22 acre lake stocked with bream and bass. Picnic and barbecue areas are also available. The Community Center overlooks Lake Ellis and will comfortably seat a maximum of 336 people. There is a 1.2 mile walking trail which surrounds Lake Ellis and the Community Center. Annual Town of Chatom Mardi Gras Parade

This is somewhat of a typical Mardi Gras parade but showcases various communities surrounding the Town of Chatom. There is a BBQ competition attached to the parade sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and later that night the Maids of Merriment (MOMs) host a Mardi Gras Ball at the Chatom Community Center. Deerfield Golf Course                          

Deerfield Golf Club, located on Hwy 56 East, consists of an 18-hole golf course. For green fees and rental information about the club house call (251) 847-2056.

 

Washington County Museum

Located in basement area of the Washington County courthouse. The museum showcases many replicas of Washington County’s rich past. Washington County is Alabama’s 1st county and boasts the 1st territorial capital at St. Stephens.

Emmet Woods Lake & Healing Spring              

The Washington County State Public Lake (or Emmet Wood Lake) is an 84-acre lake located 2 miles west of Millry, Alabama. There is an accessible fishing pier, as well as launching ramp and boats for rent. Picnic pavilions are available, as well as camping and RV spots. Bass fishing and fishing for catfish are year-round activities, with Bluegill being caught in the spring and summer.
